Résumé | Data from long-term studies of 2 social groups of brown lemurs and 1 group of ring-tailed lemurs reveal that group members periodically target others for intense aggression. The vast majority of episodes occurred between like-sex adolescents and adults in conjunction with estrous cycling or infant births and most often after groups reached apparent critical sizes. Aggression patterns were also affected by the time of year and by the kinship of targets. This behavior may reflect previously unknown tactics in reproductive competition. |
