Title |
A review of the pollination ecology in the genus Vanilla (Orchidaceae) with focus on the species of Madagascar |
Summary |
The review is an introductory essay that provides the necessary background knowledge of the pollination ecology of vanilla species to carry out a field study in Madagascar. The genus Vanilla is pantropical and includes 107 species of which six are endemic to Madagascar. Most epiphytic or hemiepiphytic vines and variation habitats ranges from subtropical to equatorial forest. Most flower are show, fragrant, gullet-sapped, short lived and produced in succession. The column is relatively simple in structure and function. Some species have an unspecialized rostellum. The pollen is soft, mealy, sticky Vanilla species are primarily bee pollinated, but there is no lack of knowledge in all geographical areas. In the American tropics euglossine bees are thought to be the principal pollinators and three pollination systems have been suggested. In the old world other large bees most likely acts as pollinators. Pollination in Malagasy species however yet unknown |
